A Contemporary Literary Metapublication
Verso/Recto is a contemporary literary meta-publication for writers and readers interested in the process of writing itself. The bi-monthly publication features, in prose and poetry, the voices of writers reflecting on the philosophies, strategies, and processes that underlie their craft.
WORDMARK DEVELOPMENT
IDEATION
I wanted my wordmark to exude a clean, modern, and lightweight feel to complement the craft-focused nature of the modern literary publication and its audience of readers and writers. Additional direction words included Craftsmanship, Openness, Expression, and Discovery.
REFINEMENT
I started with a condensed sans serif display face. In borrowing the more dramatic curves from the C and E and applying them to the R and T, I gradually moved toward a monospaced effect. The finishing touches emerged when I mirrored the S curve to form the body of the lowercase E, which resolved the competing diagonals and paved the way for the 12º slash to become a prominent feature in my visual system.
